Breast Cancer

It is the most common type of cancer seen in women. One in 8 women is at risk for breast cancer. These data show how important this disease is. There is no single cause of breast cancer. Many factors combine and lead to this disease.

The most important risk factor is being female. Although breast cancer is seen in males, this rate is only 1%. Many risk factors such as obesity, smoking, family history of breast cancer, late menopause, not having children, not breastfeeding and the presence of some genetic disorders are found to be the causes of breast cancer. Early menopause, having children, breastfeeding and giving birth at an early age are among the factors that reduce the risk of breast cancer.

The most important role in the recognition of the disease is self-examination by women. A mass felt by a self-examining woman, the appearance of an orange peel on the breast skin, collapse of the nipple, discharge from the nipple, and color changes of the breast skin can be easily noticed. In the presence of such findings, a doctor should be consulted, and diagnosis can be made by expert examination, mammography and/or breast ultrasound. Also, annual check-up and mammography after 40 years of age are recommended to all women even without any findings. Biopsy is necessary to determine whether the mass detected by examination and imaging methods is cancerous. Biopsy can be performed as a fine needle, thick needle or surgery. The method of removal of the mass and pathological examination depends on the choice of the surgeon.

The main treatment of breast cancer is surgery. After the surgery, the patient may be required to receive radiotherapy (radiation) and/or chemotherapy. The main factor in determining this is the stage of the disease. Surgical treatment is very successful. While there are many surgical methods, it is appropriate to find a common ground when deciding the type of surgery according to the stage of the disease, the patient’s request and the opinion of the doctor.

The most important factor in treatment success is early diagnosis. Early diagnosis is possible by acquiring the habit of self-examination.
